Everything new students and parents usually ask before their first class.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and self-defense system built on leverage, technique, and position rather than size or strength. Instead of strikes, it uses grappling — controlling positions and safe submissions — so a smaller, weaker person can hold their own against someone much bigger. No experience is required to start.

Comfortable clothes and a water bottle. Training attire is also available for purchase after your first class.
No fitness requirements at all. BJJ relies on technique and timing rather than strength or speed, so students start at every fitness level and build up naturally from there.
No — confident kids make kinder kids. We teach children to stand up for themselves and others, using words first and physical response only as a last resort. Rather than punches or kicks, Gracie Bullyproof teaches how to neutralize, defend, control, and negotiate.
Absolutely — we encourage parents to watch their kids train, and many parents join our adult classes too, so the whole family trains together.
All martial arts have value, but Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has been proven effective for smaller people defending themselves for nearly a century, and it can also be the most gentle — focused on neutralizing a threat rather than striking.

What is Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and self-defense system built around controlling an opponent through leverage, technique, and position — not size or strength.

How it works

Instead of relying on strikes, BJJ uses grappling: takedowns, controlling positions, and submissions like joint locks and chokes. These let a smaller, weaker person safely control or neutralize a larger, stronger opponent.

Why it works

Technique beats strength. By using leverage and body mechanics correctly, a properly applied technique can overcome nearly any size or strength advantage — this is the core principle Jiu-Jitsu was built on nearly a century ago.

That’s what makes it one of the most effective forms of realistic self-defense, and also one of the fastest-growing sports and fitness activities in the world.

No experience is required to start. Every class begins with the fundamentals in a safe, cooperative environment, long before any live sparring is introduced.
